VAT registration in the UK

Can anyone advise on whether you need to be VAT registered to participate in FBA (at least in the UK)?

You don’t want to register for vat until you absolutely have to, £85k rolling 12 months turnover.

You also want to get yourself vat exempt from Amazon seller fees.
