Trying to change a product title

I own the listing and brand and want to change the title of the listing. But I’m getting Error 8541:

"8541: The value ‘(My NEW product title here)’ conflicts with value ‘(My OLD product title here)’’ of ASIN ‘(My ASIN’ in the Amazon catalog. If you are trying to list ASIN ‘(My ASIN)’, update the value to ‘(My OLD product title)’. If this is a different product, update identifying information such as UPC/EAN/Part Number/etc

Then, trying to ask support, the contact form asks for the proposed new title, but then rejects is saying the guidelines state it must be under 80 characters? Is this true? Most of my products are over this, as are most listings in the amazon catalogue! Are listing over this getting suppressed/lowered in search?

Any advice?

There must be something wrong with your account. I have never encountered anything like this. If you are the brand owner and you are perfectly synced with Amazon Brand Registry, then you can make any edits yourself, which will then become reflected in the listing.

An error like this would be received by someone who doesn’t own the brand.

Was the listing tampered with in any way, such as to change it from a generic listing or from a different brand in the past?

Thanks Kika. I since had this back from seller support: So I’ve deleted the lsiting and will re-create it later today and see how that goes!.

"On checking our resources, we see that the ASIN is linked to your brand.

When an ASIN is linked to your brand, Amazon increases the strength of your contributions and can prevent changes to specific attributes after their initial entry. Due to this, you’re unable to update changes to the listing.

When you find the locked product data for an ASIN is incorrect for any of these SKUs, the impacted SKUs for the ASIN must be deleted for 24 hours. This will enable our system to allow changes to these locked attributes.

While updating changes, you may face conflict error during submission. To prevent the conflict error, we have submitted your contribution to respective Attribute on the backend. Since we at Seller Support unable to override the brand contribution due to lower reconciliation score with locked product data, we request you to perform delete and wait 24 hours prior relist with the updated contribution."

Yes, Amazon has a general guideline recommending titles to be under 80 characters, especially in certain categories like Health & Personal Care, Beauty, or Grocery , but in practice many listings exceed this without suppression. That said, the 8541 error you’re getting typically means that Amazon’s catalog backend has locked that ASIN’s title based on prior data, and your new title is being flagged as inconsistent, even if you’re the brand owner.

Just to update this for anyone with similar, I went ahead and deleted for 24 hours then recreated the listing (bit of a pain re-entering the title (which was the bit I was needing to change), bullets and description from fresh but still) and it works again.

If anyone else needs to do the same I would copy those elements into a document to paste back in after 24 hours!)
