SKU's and UPC barcodes for color variations

I have products that come in four different colors. The products arrived with tags but with the same UPC code on the tags. So all the different colors have the same UPC. I am about to go to the GS1 website and buy four different UPC codes for the different colors.
The question is, what do I do with the original UPC that is on the tag? Would that be the parent and the UPC codes I purchase are the child variations? So do I still use the original UPC as the parent? Or do I not need the original UPC since I’m purchasing new ones?

The original UPC on the tags is the “Parent” SKU, representing the main product without any color variation.

Purchase four different UPC codes from GS1 for each color variation to label them as “Child” SKUs.

Apply the correct UPC label to each product’s packaging according to its color variation.

When listing products on e-commerce platforms, use the Parent-Child relationship to link all color variations to the main listing.

While using the Parent SKU isn’t mandatory, it can be beneficial for inventory management and tracking.
