Noticing some listings where the review count drastically increased overnight, then decreased and increased again

I’m talking about the count going from 9 to 45,000, then three months later dropping back to 200, and again drastically increasing to 55,000.

What’s going on here?

Likely an ASIN merge or Amazon glitch causing reviews to combine and split.

Variations on the listing getting merged and unmerged.

Yes, I thought of that too, but this doesn’t have any variations.

What you’re seeing is most likely the result of Amazon merging and unmerging ASINs or parent-child variations, which can cause major fluctuations in the visible review count. When Amazon links products through variation listings or merges similar products, the review count often reflects the total reviews of all connected variations, which can cause a huge spike. If they later reverse the merge or adjust the variation structure, the count drops back down to what’s actually on that specific ASIN. These merges can be triggered by automated systems or seller requests and aren’t always consistent or stable, which explains the sudden increases and drops over time.

If there are review violations, Amazon can disable or even remove reviews. But it could be due to a merge as others said.

Could it be Amazon tampering with the review counts?
