Negotiating with Alibaba suppliers

I just ordered samples from a couple of suppliers and already negotiated the price. However, after receiving the samples, I realized that the boxes are too big to fall under the large standard category.

With that in mind, how would you approach negotiating with the supplier again, this time to include custom-sized boxes or simply a smaller box to meet the threshold?

Especially since, from the supplier’s perspective, this would be considered custom packaging, and they would likely require a higher MOQ.

Manufacturers are not charities, they need to make a profit. I am not sure what you are expecting. If you want something done by manufacturer, you need to tell them your requirements.

So if it will cost them more, it is right that they should charge you for it. I am sure they will advise you if there is a MOQ.

Simply tell them your issue and ask them to advise you if it is possible to make the change at no extra cost. You never know, the change may make sense and they might change their whole production.

I would approach the supplier by first checking if they already have a smaller box option available, as many manufacturers offer multiple packaging sizes. Instead of framing it as custom packaging, I’d present it as a minor adjustment to optimize shipping costs and improve sales potential, emphasizing that a more FBA-friendly size would lead to higher reorder volumes. If they insist on a higher MOQ for a custom-sized box, I’d negotiate by either asking for a phased approach with a lower MOQ initially or offering to slightly adjust the internal packaging to fit within standard size limits. Additionally, I’d leverage the fact that I have multiple suppliers and mention that others are offering more suitable packaging, which could encourage flexibility. If necessary, I’d also explore whether reducing excess padding or reorganizing the product inside the box could help meet the threshold without requiring major packaging changes.

I agree with @AmazonUKForumRefugee. You can order the goods with the standard larger boxes, or if you require smaller ones, go for the larger MOQ. This can be more expensive, but it will distinguish you from any potential competitors and also, the MOQ usually isn’t so high.

Since custom-sized boxes could be considered custom packaging and may require a higher MOQ, the best approach is to explain to the supplier that the current box size significantly impacts shipping and fulfillment costs, making it less viable for you to place larger orders. Start by asking if they offer any alternative packaging sizes that could fit within the large standard category without major customization. If not, propose a minor modification rather than a full redesign, such as reducing void space or using thinner material to minimize dimensions. If they insist on a higher MOQ for custom packaging, consider negotiating a test run with a smaller batch to prove sales volume before committing to a larger order. Alternatively, you can explore third-party packaging solutions or have the products repacked at a prep center to meet the size threshold while maintaining cost efficiency.
