Listing new version of existing product

Hey everyone,

I’m launching a deluxe version of my existing product and trying to figure out the best way to list it on Amazon. The main difference is that the deluxe version includes a sticker and some minor tweaks, but the core product is the same.

A few questions:

  1. Is it better to list this as a child ASIN under the same parent or as a separate listing?

  2. Have you had issues where a new version didn’t match the other ones when added as a variation?

  3. For style variations, does Amazon price match at the parent level or only for individual child ASINs? If a new version is introduced, will it be price-matched to the existing version?

Appreciate any insights from your experience!

Better to create a new listing. New version of your product isn’t considered to be a variation like size or color.

If the deluxe version is essentially the same core product with added value (like a sticker and minor upgrades), listing it as a child ASIN under a parent makes sense, especially if you’re using a variation type like “Style Name” or “Edition.” This way, customers can easily compare both versions, and your original product’s reviews can help the new version gain visibility. However, if the deluxe version is priced significantly higher, you may run into price comparison issues where customers always gravitate toward the cheaper one, or Amazon flags the pricing difference depending on your category. Also, some sellers have experienced situations where the variation gets suppressed because Amazon’s system doesn’t see the versions as “valid” to be grouped, so it’s important to make sure the differences still fit Amazon’s variation guidelines. As for pricing, Amazon typically treats each child ASIN separately in terms of price matching, but occasionally they’ll apply pricing pressure across variations if they think the items are too similar. If the deluxe version is different enough to stand alone and targets a slightly different buyer persona, a separate listing might work better in the long term, but if you’re trying to boost visibility quickly, a variation approach under the same parent ASIN is a solid start.
