Launching a private label business

Hello,

I’d like to venture into private label, what tips can you share?

Thanks!

Starting a private label business can be a great move if done right, focus first on selecting a product with steady demand, low competition, and clear opportunities for improvement based on customer reviews. Validate your idea using tools like Helium 10 or Jungle Scout, and source from a reliable manufacturer (often on Alibaba), but always order samples before committing. Build a strong brand identity with professional packaging, clear messaging, and quality images. When launching, use optimized listings, Amazon SEO, and a structured PPC strategy to drive visibility. Consider using Amazon’s Early Reviewer or Vine program for initial reviews, and be ready to monitor metrics and adjust quickly. Most importantly, treat it like a brand, not just a product, you’re building long-term equity, not just chasing quick sales.

You need immense capital just to get started, with no profits whatsoever for at least a year. It’s like a baby, you need to invest in it heavily to enjoy the rewards later. It’s not an easy road, I’ll say.

Have £15–20k ready to invest. I wouldn’t recommend private label as a first venture.

Be ready to spend a good amount, there’s the cost of the products, and then you have the ad costs, which are significant for a brand new product on the market. If you don’t have any experience with ads, listing creation, and optimizations, it will be quite challenging. I’d recommend starting with bundles or similar approaches to get your feet wet and gain some experience.

If you don’t want to burn your money, then don’t do this.

Research a profitable niche, focus on quality, build a strong brand, and optimize listings.

Choose reliable suppliers, ensure legal compliance, and offer great customer service.

Decide between FBA or FBM for fulfillment.

Consider the new China tariffs if you’re selling on Amazon.com, sourcing from elsewhere could be a better option.

Don’t do Private Label, tip number 1…

Why is that?

Just don’t, it’s a long story to explain. This model does work, but certainly not for beginners.
