FBA shipment from China

Hi everyone,

I’m new to selling and just starting to source products from China. I wanted to ask, what is the cheapest shipping method from China to the USA?

My product is small/medium size and I’m planning to order a small quantity first. Should I go with:

  • Air shipping

  • Sea shipping

  • Or any cheap DDP / freight forwarder option?

Also, if you have any tips to reduce shipping cost, please share 🙏

Thank you!

Hello,

for small first orders from China to the USA, air shipping or DDP air shipping through a freight forwarder is usually the best option, even though sea shipping is cheaper per unit. The reason is that sea freight has a lot of fixed costs such as customs handling, port fees, and local delivery charges, so it only becomes cost-effective once your order volume is larger.

For small or medium products and beginner quantities, DDP air shipping is often the simplest and safest because the freight forwarder handles customs clearance, taxes, and final delivery, which reduces the risk of delays or paperwork mistakes.

The cheapest option overall is usually sea shipping, but for small test orders it often ends up slower and more complicated than it is worth. Air shipping costs more per kilogram, but inventory arrives much faster and you avoid tying up cash for weeks while the goods are in transit. Many new sellers use air shipping for the first shipment to test the product, then switch to sea freight once sales are stable.

To reduce shipping costs, try to keep packaging compact, avoid unnecessary weight, ask suppliers to optimize carton sizes, and compare quotes from multiple freight forwarders rather than using only the supplier’s shipping option. Also make sure you calculate total landed cost, not just shipping price, because cheap quotes sometimes exclude customs, duties, or local delivery fees.

For small quantities, air shipping can be a good option to test your product quickly, even though it’s a bit expensive.

For scaling, LCL sea shipping or DDP is usually the most cost-effective approach.

One thing many new sellers miss is what happens after the product reaches the U.S., having a local 3PL partner can really improve delivery speed, reduce costs, and increase customer trust.

We actually provide U.S.-based 3PL services (storage, fulfillment, fast shipping) from our Florida warehouse.

If you ever need support setting that up, feel free to reach out.
