I recently purchased a GTIN through GS1 USA and initially assigned it to a specific product. However, I have since decided not to proceed with that product and am considering assigning the GTIN to a different product instead.
To date, I have not used or shared the GTIN externally, nor have I downloaded or printed any barcodes associated with it.
Could you please advise whether it’s possible to reassign this unused GTIN to a new product, or would it be necessary to obtain a new GTIN for the new product?
Yes, since you haven’t used, published, or distributed the GTIN in any way (including on Amazon, packaging, or with retailers), you can reassign it to a different product. GS1 allows reassignment of unused GTINs as long as they haven’t been circulated or associated with any product in the marketplace. Just ensure that once you reassign it, the GTIN is only ever used for that new product going forward, GS1 guidelines require that once a GTIN is publicly used, it becomes permanently linked to that specific product. In your case, because the GTIN was never implemented or distributed, you’re in the clear to reassign it without needing to purchase a new one.
