Anyone with Philippines VAs?

Hello!

Is it obligatory to provide a 13th salary for a Filipino VA? She is good at sourcing—not perfect, but good.

She has a salary of 25,000 php per month and 18 days of paid leave.

It’s considered a part of the overall package in the Philippines - given I assume you’re not based there then you’re not legally required to pay it, but you should understand that not paying it would feel to your VA that you don’t think that their performance is up to standard so you’d need to be prepared for your VA to feel penalised.

If you’re worried about cash flow at the end of the year then you could slightly overpay into your Wise account (or whatever you use) each month through the year & let it accrue in there so as you spread the cost evenly through the year instead of paying it all in one go at the end of the year.

13th month pay is a mandatory law here in the Philippines and doesn’t apply if the employer is in a foreign country. However, if you want to show your appreciation to her it’s up to you. It really helps us Filipinos during our needs in Christmas and New Year. It also boosts your employees morale and something to look forward to during holidays.

It would be fair enough to give your VA a 13th month salary. And should be clear within the contract.

I would definitely pay it, employees are the back bone of your business. Having employees who know they are appreciated, encourages them to work harder and will eventually treat their work as their own business. The way i see it, initially its hard work to train them, but once they have developed the skills to be able to work on their own efficiently without support, then you have to introduce perks by way of incentives, and everyones loves money, what better way to show you’re appreciation by bumping up their salary or giving additional bonuses.
